Sustainable design is not a trend of recent decades. This proves the edgy Crate collection of the architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld from the 1930s. The basis for the design were surplus wooden transport crates, which should be given new life with the robust outdoor series.
Like the original design, the new edition of the Crate Dining Chair is characterised by balanced proportions and a simple, architectural construction that does not lack the necessary comfort thanks to the gently sloping backrest and the supportive armrests . This makes Crate the ideal feel-good furniture for your outdoor area!
Architecture and interior in harmony: Gerrit Rietveld
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is one of the greatest Dutch architects and furniture designers of all time. After training as a carpenter and opening his own business, Rietveld turned to architecture. As a follower of the well-known De Stijl movement , his style was progressive and always pursued harmony between architecture and interior.
After furniture pieces such as the Red and Blue Chair and the Zig Zag Chair, the famous Crate collection followed in 1934. Here, Rietveld's mission to create well-designed and affordable furniture for the masses was reflected - values that are also at the top of HAY's list. Perfect basis for the collaboration between Rietveld Originals and HAY and the relaunch of the legendary Crate series!
Material and format
Crate is made of pine wood and has a water-based lacquer finish. In addition to the natural version, Crate is also available in four colour variants.
The chair is 57.5 cm wide, 64 cm deep and 81 cm high. For even more seating comfort , you can equip your Crate Dining Chairs with the matching seat cushions, which you can also find in our shop.
