Hella Jongerius was born in De Meern in 1963 and studied industrial design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 1993, she participated in the Milan Furniture Fair with "Droog Design" with great success. Since 1998, Jongerius has been teaching at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 2000 she founded her own studio - JongeriusLab.

Hella Jongerius became known above all for her designs for vases, in which she combined porcelain with embroidery, for example, or joined porcelain and glass with adhesive tape. In Germany, Jongerius became known to a wider public in 2002 through her exhibition "Trial and Error" in the Passagen programme at the Cologne Furniture Fair. There she presented shelves from her studio filled with designs, preliminary models, found objects and prototypes. In the same year, she caused a sensation with her "Repeat" upholstery fabric designs for the American textile manufacturer Maharam.

For Vitra, Jongerius created the long, flat "Polder" sofa, for which she was inspired by the vastness of the Dutch landscape. Jongerius' work is shown in exhibitions, museums and collections worldwide. In 2004, she was the first woman to be voted "Designer of the Year" by the Salon du Meuble in Paris.
