Functional simplicity: B 9 d side table by Thonet
The B 9 range of set tables by Thonet is characterised by its purist design and its versatility of use. The small tables are perfect as coffee tables, side tables for seating groups, as special places for decorative objects or simply as practical shelves. You can combine them stylishly and push them under each other to save space after use.
Simple, effective design
Inspired by the bentwood tradition, Marcel Breuer experimented with bent tubular steel already in the 1920s and 1930s. Among his first designs were the B 9 set tables, originally conceived for the canteen of the Bauhaus building in Dessau. In the meantime, the simple set table made of chromed tubular steel and rectangular top has also become an absolute classic that cuts an elegant figure anywhere.
Thonet - over 200 years of tradition
The Frankenberg-based manufacturer stands for durability and an irrepressible drive for innovation. Thonet was the first manufacturer to bring bentwood furniture onto the market and the first to sell tubular steel furniture. Michael Thonet founded his own workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. In the 1830s he experimented with strips of veneer boiled in glue and is therefore regarded as the inventor of "furniture made of bent wood". In 1842, he was invited to Vienna by the Austrian state chancellor Prince Metternich and the coffee house culture there laid the foundation for Thonet's later success. Given this desire for innovation, it is not surprising that Thonet also cultivated links with the Bauhaus and Marcel Breuer. Thus Thonet implemented Breuer's experiments with cold-bent tubular steel and produced the famous cantilever chairs.
Material and format
The Thonet B 9 d is 66 cm wide, 39 cm deep and 60 cm high.
The table top made of MDF with a thickness of 20 mm can be ordered in top lacquer (here no wood structure is visible), structure lacquer (here the structure shimmers through the colour) or beech stained in the Thonet colours - as well as with optiwhite glass top with diamond cut. Since 2014, the new ThonetDur® surface has also been available - the high-quality 1.2 mm thick laminate top has an extremely supple effect thanks to its silky matt look and is also even more scratch-resistant than lacquered versions. In addition, the Pure Materials versions - solid oiled oak or solid oiled walnut - are offered (tabletop 3-layer solid wood, 21 mm). The frame of the Pure Materials is nickel-plated, while the other versions are made of chromed tubular steel, optionally lacquered in colour.
