The cantilever chair S 533 N created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927 follows the motto „less is more“.
The basic construction is a bend steel tube frame which – like All Season models – is covered with a durable
plastic mesh. It is weather and UV resistant.
Thorough tests, like a 720 hour long test with salt spray mist confirm the durability of the seat. Through simulating
multiple lifecycles Thonet proves that the S 533 N is resistant againt any kind of weather.
The frame is powdercoated thus providing UV resistance – the Thonet-Protect-coating makes sure that you will
have much joy with your new design garden chairs.
Design of the S 533 N
The famous architect and Bauhaus-teacher Ludwig Mies van der Rohe got to know the experiments with steel tube
of Mart Stam – the creator of the legendary S 33 and S 34 cantilever.
Finding the idea interesting to create a cantilever chair Mies van der Rohe used steel tube. In contrast to Mart Stam
he used cold bend steel tube.
