Normally, glass is associated as a lightweight with sharp edges and smooth surfaces. But glass can also be different. Designer Sebastian Herkner proves this with alwa. The design appears with a massive look and at the same time flatters with gentle contours. The raw, hot glass mass with its natural bubbles is an imprint of the structure, including the uneven, sensitive surface. You just want to touch it... and the table is also ideal for placing a variety of items.

Championing imperfection. Celebrating the beauty of each unique ripple, bubble and swirl. The alwa collection of coffee and side tables traps the movement of glass in a generous time capsule. Inspired by undulating surface water, the collection mixes a sturdy form with a soft aesthetic.
Beauty, nature and craftsmanship
pulpo is a design editor for high-end products in the home sector – fascinated by the craft of the ceramic and glassblowing workshops and guided by the rough aesthetics of these unique pieces.
pulpo’s philosophy goes back to the idea of the “carte blanche”. The designers and artists develop their designs freely and experimentally. A variety of materials and a weakness for structures are clear strengths here.
The headquarters of pulpo is in Weil am Rhein, near the Swiss border. Consisting of the creative and sales department, warehouse and logistics, this is the think tank for their artists and designers. pulpo’s dealer network extends far beyond Weil am Rhein – from Iceland and Dubai to Australia.
Poetic compositions, refined shapes and delicate surfaces
This is what the name Sebastian Herkner stands for. The designer founded his Offenbach am Main based studio in 2006 and creates furniture, lighting and textiles, as well as spaces and installations – often combining contemporary techniques with traditional craftsmanship.
Without leaving out the importance of material and sensory beauty, the multifaceted designer follows a strong conceptional approach: “I transport and interpret characteristics from various contexts of society and culture, and implement them in new artefacts”, says Sebastian Herkner.
Repeatedly awarded, the designer teaches at the university, collaborates with fairs as well as museums, and works for some of the most prestigious design manufacturers of our time.
Material and format
The alwa three big side table, sitting atop a simple sheet metal section or thin metal legs, is available in the colours amber, smoky grey, and transparent. It has a diameter of 56 cm and is 35 cm high.
Each piece is created from transparent or coloured casted and handblown glass.
