The Bertoia Plastic Side Chair is a classic in design history and was designed by Harry Bertoia. In 1950, Hans and Florence Knoll offered the sculptor Harry Bertoia the freedom to apply his artistic concepts to the design of a chair for their collection, which was still in its early stages. "We decided to let him work in complete freedom so as not to hinder the creativity that already characterised him in the panorama of designers at the time," recalls Florence Knoll. In his constant quest for perfection, Bertoia worked by hand and tried out many variations to shape the space, using a light, airy structure.
The chair is characterised by its extremely comfortable seat and its adaptability to the most diverse contexts, from the home to the contract sector.
Material and format
The chair has a chrome-plated or powder-coated frame. The seat shell is made of plastic. The chair is 52.3 cm wide, 54.6 cm deep and 77 cm high. The seat height is 45.6 cm.
