Mesh back: S34 N cantilever chair by Thonet

Zeitgeist and a sense of tradition - the S34 cantilever chair combines both. Its clear shape and fine proportions are in perfect harmony with its springy, slightly swinging movement and comfort-enhancing armrests.

The S 34 and its brother the S 33 caused quite a stir at the opening of the Werkbund exhibition at the Weißenhof in Stuttgart. Designer Mart Stam had been experimenting with thin gas pipes since 1925. This resulted in designs that no longer rested on four legs but on two. This formal restraint shaped the history of modern furniture design. For this reason, the S34 cantilever chair is much more than just a new piece of furniture; it is part of a revolutionary overall concept of a new approach to architecture and life.

Designer Mart Stam

Mart Stam was born in the Netherlands in 1899 and is considered one of the most important architects of the modern age. He first learned the profession of a carpenter and drawing teacher and felt a strong commitment to rational building and design. As an architect and designer who experimented mainly with tubular steel, he made a special contribution to the Weißenhof housing estate in Stuttgart in 1927. in 1928 and 1929 he worked as an architect in Frankfurt and as a guest lecturer at the famous Bauhaus University in Dessau. in 1939, after several years as a creative architect in Russia and the Netherlands, he became director of the Amsterdam School of Arts and Crafts. At the end of the 1970s, he moved to Switzerland, where he died on 23 February 1986. Stam obtained the artistic copyright for the cantilever chair, which is now held by Thonet.

Thonet - 200 years of tradition

The Frankenberg-based manufacturer stands for durability and an irrepressible drive for innovation. Thonet was the first manufacturer to bring bentwood furniture onto the market and the first to sell tubular steel furniture . Michael Thonet founded his own workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. In the 1830s he experimented with strips of veneer boiled in glue and is therefore regarded as the inventor of "furniture made of bent wood". in 1842, he was invited to Vienna by the Austrian state chancellor Prince Metternich and the coffee house culture there laid the foundation for Thonet's later success. Given this desire for innovation, it is not surprising that Thonet also cultivated links with the Bauhaus and Marcel Breuer. Thus Thonet implemented Breuer's experiments with cold-bent tubular steel and produced the famous cantilever chairs.

The seat and back are made of a plastic mesh. The frame is made of tubular steel. The chair is 57 cm wide, 64 cm deep and 86 cm high. The seat height is 47 cm and the armrests are 67 cm high.
