BauhausNowhaus: K10N folding table by Tecta

The minimalistic folding miracle of that time has been given a new coat of paint: the K10N folding table from Tecta shines in fresh colours in the BauhausNowhaus Edition. As an inconspicuous cube, the tea table looks just as modest as its original designer.

But in the unfolded version it enchants everyone - it forms a Swiss cross and reminds of the strict lines of Walter Gropius's director's room, which also served as a source of inspiration for the table.

The reinterpretation puts the K10 directly in a new light - the bright colours ensure that the table catches the eye even when not folded out. High-contrast colours focus on the constructive character of the table. Surfaces and supports have also been designed more filigree, so that a lighter and smaller brother of the original is created.

History of the original version

In 1924 Erich Brendel designed the K10 tea table at the Bauhaus in Weimar, which was both foldable and rollable. He modestly called it a "tea table". The original from that time was for a long time privately owned by Bauhaus designer Karla Luz-Ruland. Since 1968, the Museum of Modern Art in New York has tried in vain to acquire the prototype. In 1982, after years of personal contact, Luz-Ruland bequeathed the tea table to Tecta, which now exhibits it as part of its collection in the Kragstuhl museum in Lauenförde.

Tobias Groß - Designer of the Reedition

The designer Tobias Groß was born in Braunschweig in 1976. From 1997 to 2002 he studied design at the University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. His diploma thesis was awarded first place in the First Move Design Award at Messe Frankfurt a.M.. In 2004 he founded his own interdisciplinary design studio in Cologne and then the "Studio für Gestaltung" in 2018. He has worked with numerous renowned clients in the fields of architecture, design, art and culture.

Excerpt from an interview on the website of the manufacturer Tecta

Studio für Gestaltung opted for the tea table by Erich Brendel for the reinterpretation of a Bauhaus piece of furniture. A piece of furniture that at first glance seems reserved. Why did it appeal to you?

Tobias Groß: As designers, we have been working with Tecta for a long time. In the course of this collaboration, this unusual and at the same time understated tea table caught my eye more and more. He doesn't impose himself and hasn't yet got a big stage in communication. The enthusiasm grew as we took a closer look at him. Brendel's design is reduced and clear like the Bauhaus. It embodies reduction, functionality, but also playfulness and humour. Things that are strongly connected with "today".

Material and size

The folding table has four folding and adjustable flaps. It is not folded out 43 cm wide and deep and folded out 120 cm. The MDF panels are two-tone lacquered with deep matt textured lacquer.
