In 1924 Marianne Brandt, the only woman to work in the Bauhaus metal workshop, designed a cylindrical ashtray with a tiltable lid that lets the ash slide into the container below. The lid also serves as an odour trap. This principle has since been imitated many times in the production of ashtrays.
