Re-edition: MR 517 / MR517 side table Thonet
A versatile classic rediscovered - on the occasion of the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019, the MR 517 coffee table was reissued by Thonet. The original version was re-issued as a re-edition from the Thonet tubular steel furniture catalog of 1935 with a tubular steel frame and glass top.
The coffee table was probably created around 1928, when designer Mies van der Rohe designed the Esters and Lange houses in Krefeld. The Besau Marguerre design studio took a close look at the design table and developed a contemporary adaptation that remains close to the original, yet was adapted by small details. For example, the central crossing point of the table legs under the glass top has now been made more elegant.
Thonet - 200 years of tradition
The Frankenberg-based manufacturer stands for consistency and the irrepressible urge for innovation. Thonet was the first manufacturer to introduce bentwood furniture to the market and to distribute tubular steel furniture. Michael Thonet founded his own workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. In the 1830s, he experimented with veneer strips cooked in glue and is therefore considered the inventor of "furniture made of bent wood". In 1842 he was invited to Vienna by the Austrian State Chancellor Prince Metternich, and the coffee house culture there laid the foundation for Thonet's later success. With this will to innovate, it is not surprising that Thonet also cultivated connections to the Bauhaus and Marcel Breuer. Thonet implemented his experiments with cold-bent tubular steel and produced the well-known cantilever chairs.
