Happy Birthday: MR Bauhaus Collection by Knoll International

For the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus School, Knoll International has also reissued a classic of Bauhaus history: the MR collection by designer Mies van der Rohe.

The MR collection consists of the first steel furniture designs by the famous designer. Inspired by Bauhaus colleague Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe chose the material and was inspired by 19th century iron swing chairs.

In 1977 the collection received an award from the Museum of Modern Art and in the following year the Design Center Stuttgart Award.

Design talent Mies van der Rohe

Mies van der Rohe, born Ludwig Mies, began his career in his parents' stonemasonry business. After an apprenticeship with furniture designer Bruno Paul in Berlin, Mies finally joined Peter Behrens' architectural office before founding his own office in Berlin in 1912 and later becoming a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and director of the Bauhaus.

Material and size

The frame consists of a polished tubular steel frame. The upholstered leather or fabric seats rest on a row of leather straps.

A stamp with the logo of the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus distinguishes the Bauhaus collection.

The collection includes standard and adjustable Chaiselongues, chairs with and without armrests and a stool.
