Limited Edition: Organic Conference Chair from Vitra

Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen designed the Organic Chair together for a competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Its upholstered and organically shaped seat shell gave the extraordinarily comfortable chair its name. However, due to a lack of production technology, the chair could not be mass-produced until 1950, like the famous Plastic Armchairs by Eames and the Tulip Chair by Saarinen.

Now in a very special colour: the world-famous classic is now available in a new look for the Eames Special Collection 2023.  The Organic Conference was inspired by Ray Eames' passion for flower arrangements. It is available in three colours in Ria fabric from Kvadrat with a floral pattern. The collection is limited until 31.01.24.

Eero Saarinen & Charles Eames

Eero Saarinen was born in Finland in 1910, the son of architect Eliel Saarinen. He first studied sculpture in Paris and then architecture at Yale University in New Haven. in 1936, he began working in his father's architectural practice. At this time, he was offered a teaching position at the Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, where he met Charles Eames. The latter was experimenting with designs for furniture made of moulded plywood. in 1940, the two won first prize in the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Material and format

The Organic Chair consists of a laminated seat shell lined with polyurethane foam and a fabric cover. The base is made of black ash. The wood comes from Western Europe and/or Poland.

The chair is 72.5 cm wide, 61.5 cm deep and 93.5 cm high. The seat height is 42 cm.

  • Ria fabric: 84% virgin wool (worsted), 12% viscose, 4% nylon
