Doing good: Panda wooden figure by Kay Bojesen
Designer and craftsman Kay Bojesen created 1952 the bear Ursula - inspired by a little bear cub raised by the staff of the zoological garden. More than 65 years later Kay Bojesen Denmark has again been inspired by the zoological garden of the Copenhagen Zoo and has designed a wooden panda on the occasion of the opening of the new panda house , modelled on Ursula the bear.
Designer Kay Bojesen
More than 2000 different designs were produced by the finecraftsman and designer Kay Bojesen in the course of his career. This makes him one of the most productive Danish craftsmen of the 20th century. Besides the well-known and popular monkeys and other wooden animals, his work also includes jewellery, cutlery, teapots and silver goblets. Kay Bojesen first completed an apprenticeship as a silversmith with Georg Jensen . With the birth of his son Otto in 1919, Bojesen became interested inchildren's toys . He carved small wooden figures and finally focused his interest entirely on working with wood in the 1930s. He deliberately did not want to create lifelike copies of animals, but imaginative variations with a soft and flowing design that has its origins in the imagination of children.
Material and format
The panda is made of FSCcertified beech wood. This means that the wood comes from a forest in which no more trees are felled than the forest can reproduce. In addition, this ensures that the people working in the forest aretrained and haveappropriate equipment and a fair wage . The panda is 16 cm wide, 10.5 cm deep and 25 cm high.
