Flexible: Physix office swivel chair from Vitra
The Physix office swivel chair stands with its continuous seat shell, which is made of a braced textile, in a long line of ancestors of chair icons and yet it continues to develop typology decisively. Designer Alberto Meda has created an interplay of three different elements that result in a new and dynamic seating experience: the flexible frame construction, the elastic cover and the stabilising mechanism.
This construction creates an optically and physically light swivel chair that impresses with its high level of comfort and formal restraint.
Designer Alberto Meda
Alberto Meda was born in Italy in 1945. He studied mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic in Milan and was Technical Director at the well-known Italian manufacturer Kartell from 1972 to 1979. He then worked as a freelance designer for various companies such as Alias, Alessi and Vitra. Meanwhile he also works as a lecturer and gives lectures.
Alberto Meda has been working with Vitra since 1994. With his elegant office chair and table designs, he contributes significantly to Vitra's successful Office Collection.
Material and size
The mechanism and backrest of the Physix swivel chair are made of powder-coated aluminium. The chair has a synchronous motion sequence, an individual fine adjustment of the backrest counterforce and a lock in an upright position. The seat height can be infinitely adjusted via a gas spring.
The flexible frame and armrests are made of polyamide. The one-piece seat and backrest are made of a freely tensioned knitted or fabric cover. The base frame is a five-star base made of die-cast aluminium.
