Carl Hansen & Søn - Danish design since 1908
What began in 1908 as a small furniture workshop on the
Danish island of Funen has developed into a successful and globally recognised design company. Since the
carpenter Carl Hansen founded the company, two aspects have taken centre stage: an
uncompromising commitment to the finest craftsmanship and
collaboration with exceptional designers.
The development of Carl Hansen & Søn was significantly influenced by the well-known Danish designer Hans J. Wegner . The creative connection with him began in 1949 when Carl Hansen's son met Wegner and enabled the then still unknown designer to design an extensive furniture series. The Wishbone Chair, also known as CH24, is part of the collection conceived at that time and is absolutely well-known and popular today.
There are two things that make this designer chair so unmistakable: firstly, its strong characterful design with the very personal hallmark in the form of the ypsilon on the backrest and secondly, the quality guaranteed by the highest standards of craftsmanship.
The CH24 exemplifies Carl Hansen & Søn's basic idea that iconic design is a combination of simplicity, aesthetics and functionality, brought to life by high-quality craftsmanship using materials of the highest quality . The company, which is now run by the third generation of the Hansen family, grandson Knud Erik Hansen, continues to work closely with the Hans J. Wegner Studio.
Carl Hansen and Son only uses wood from sustainably managed forests for the production of its furniture. The company also favours environmentally friendly production processes and materials. For example, low-emission paints and adhesives are used to protect the health of employees and customers. Carl Hansen and Son also looks for environmentally friendly options when transporting its furniture in order to reduce its CO2 footprint .
