Small classic jewel: Platner side table by Knoll
The Platner side table is the smallest of the Platner tables, but is no less of a classic than its larger counterparts. It impresses with the highest craftsmanship and finest material processing. With the Platner side table, you get a small piece of jewellery for your home that you will enjoy for a long time. Because Knoll International guarantees the highest quality!
The smallest Low Table by Platner is not only suitable as a chic side table for living rooms. It also makes an extremely good table for lounge areas in upmarket premises or companies. Regardless of the ambience - the elegant table is guaranteed to be a stylish eye-catcher.
As occasional furniture, the little table also perfectly complements the armchairs from the Platner collection, also available in our online shop. You like the design, but the format doesn't quite meet your expectations? You can also find the Platner couch and dining table in our shop!
Filigree steel: Platner Collection
Originally introduced by Knoll in 1966, the Platner collection is an icon of modern furniture, capturing the "decorative, gentle, graceful" forms that were beginning to permeate the modern vocabulary at the time. Within the collection by Warren Platner, which the designer created exclusively for Knoll International, you will find extraordinary design tables, armchairs and stools. For example, you will also find the Platner coffee table, stools or armchairs in our online shop, which are especially eye-catching due to their filigree frames bent from round steel.
Platner personally developed the production techniques for the intricate designs. The pieces are created by welding hundreds of cylindrically bent steel rods to circular frames that serve as both structure and ornament. Each chair requires over a thousand welds in the process.
Contemporary design
Warren Platner studied at Cornell University and graduated in 1941 with a degree in architecture. After working with legendary designers Raymond Loewy, Eero Saarinen and I. M. Pei, he opened his own architectural practice and immersed himself in the creation of steel wire furniture, including developing the method and tooling to produce the in-line lounge chair.
Platner made notable architectural contributions throughout his career. Notable among his residential and commercial projects were the Georg Jensen Design Center and the Windows on the World Restaurant at the World Trade Center, both in New York City. However, it was his furniture collection for Knoll that brought Platner worldwide fame. Knoll also introduced a private office collection designed by Platner.
Knoll International - The belief in modern design
in 1938, Knoll International was founded by Hans and Florence Knoll, who used the creative genius of the Bauhaus School and the Cranbrook Academy of Art to create new types of furniture and environments for the workplace. Their approach was to combine craftsmanship with technology through the use of design. Florence Knoll also developed the idea of the modern office and pioneered interior design.
Knoll is internationally recognised for creating workplace and home furniture that inspires, evolves and endures. Knoll's thoughtful, inventive products cater to individual work styles and endure for multiple generations. Knoll's commitment to modern, sustainable design and understanding of the workplace results in a unique portfolio. Here, the latest collections line up alongside modern classics and iconic products.
For more than 80 years, Knoll has remained true to the Bauhaus design philosophy that modern furniture should complement architectural space, not compete with it. That is why Knoll uses modern design to connect people with their work, their lives, their world. The essence of it all: modern living and working with a contemporary approach without losing the connection to the past.
