60s Beauty: Richard Schultz 1966 Outdoor Lounger by Knoll

It is the pioneer among sun loungers: The 1966 lounger, designed by Richard Schultz for Knoll International.

With this lounger you can call a real milestone of design your own! The modern look brought a breath of fresh air into the spectrum of outdoor furniture of that time. The white colour makes the designer piece a timeless classic that can also be combined with natural materials like wood or concrete. With the durable materials, which do not give rust or corrosion a chance, the lounger represents the usual Knoll quality.

1966 Collection

In 1966, Richard Schultz set to work for Florence Knoll herself to design a furniture collection that would defy wind and weather. The company owner was looking for a sun lounger, garden chair and the like for her Florida estate and was unable to find what she was looking for on the market at the time. This is how the 1966 sun lounger and other garden furniture became pioneers on the modern outdoor market.

Richard Schultz

Richard Schultz joined Knoll Associates in 1951 to work with Harry Bertoia after studying at Iowa State University and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. In addition to his work for Knoll, he designed an office system for Stow/Davis. He also taught basic design at the Philadelphia College of Art and had a solo exhibition of his sculptures at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Knoll International - The belief in modern design

in 1938, Knoll International was founded by Hans and Florence Knoll, who used the creative genius of the Bauhaus School and the Cranbrook Academy of Art to create new types of furniture and environments for the workplace. Their approach was to combine craftsmanship with technology through the use of design. Florence Knoll also developed the idea of the modern office and pioneered interior design.

Knoll is internationally recognised for creating workplace and home furniture that inspires, evolves and endures. With its thoughtful, inventive products, Knoll caters to individual work styles and endures for multiple generations. Knoll's commitment to modern, sustainable design and understanding of the workplace results in a unique portfolio. Here, the latest collections line up alongside modern classics and iconic products.

For more than 80 years, Knoll has remained true to the Bauhaus design philosophy that modern furniture should complement architectural space, not compete with it. That is why Knoll uses modern design to connect people with their work, their lives, their world. The essence of it all: modern living and working with a contemporary approach without losing the connection to the past.

Material and format

In terms of material, Knoll International uses sturdy aluminium for the 1966 lounger, which is given weather-resistant properties by means of a polyester powder coating. The covering is also ideally suited for outdoor use, as it consists of vinyl-coated polyester fabric.

Practical and underlining the design at the same time are the distinctive wheels with rubber coating, which allow you to move the sun lounger from A to B in no time. You can also decide for yourself whether you want to sit or lie comfortably: The backrest can be adjusted in height from 36 to 91.5 cm. With a format of 64.5 cm width and 193 cm length, both small and large outdoor fans can enjoy the sun on the lounger.
