Thonet - design furniture with a long tradition
Thonet from Frankenberg in northern Hesse is not only one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the world - the company has always had a keen sense for forward-looking ideas. As early as 1859, company founder Michael Thonet attempted to design a simple chair that could be manufactured industrially by bending beech wood. The result was the inimitable chair no. 14, also known as the Viennese coffee house chair. In the 1930s, Thonet was the main producer of the revolutionary Bauhaus tubular steel furniture, which was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer, among others.
