Made of good wood: Ravn singing bird wooden figure by Kay Bojesen

With a height of 20.5 cm, the decorative bird Ravn towers over its smaller brother by a whole 5 cm. incidentally, 'Ravn' is the Danish word for 'raven' and the bird designed by Kay Bojesen in 1950 is indeed as pitch black as the animal original.

Designer Kay Bojesen

The fine craftsman and designer Kay Bojesen produced more than 2000 different designs over the course of his career. This makes him one of the most productive Danish craftsmen of the 20th century. In addition to the well-known and popular monkeys and other wooden animals, his work also includes jewellery, cutlery, teapots and silver goblets. Kay Bojesen initially trained as a silversmith with Georg Jensen. After the birth of his son Otto in 1919, Bojesen became interested in children's toys. He carved small wooden figures and finally focussed his interest entirely on working with wood in the 1930s. He deliberately did not want to create lifelike copies of animals, but imaginative variations with a soft and flowing design that originated in the imagination of children.

Material and format

The bird is made of painted beech wood. It is 21 cm wide and 20.5 cm high.
