Contrasting seating: Straight Chair by Knoll

The Straight chair is George Nakashima's modern interpretation of the traditional Windsor chair. With its low-gloss surfaces that enhance the natural grains of the wood, the chair reveals Nakashima's sensitivity to nature as well as his legendary artistry and craftsmanship.

Traditional and modern, Eastern and Western aesthetics - the Straight chair is full of contrasts. With his design, Nakashima conveys his deep respect for the natural forms of a tree and the inherent beauty of wood. Thus, the designer piece is perfect for lovers of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship! Thanks to its timelessly elegant look, it fits into almost every conceivable living environment.

Straight Chair 2.0

Nakashima's designs for the Splay Leg Table and the Straight Chair were created for Knoll in the 1940s and were originally also produced by Knoll. Even then, the simple elegance of his aesthetic was impressive. The line was discontinued in 1955 when Nakashima decided to produce and market all his designs himself.

In collaboration with George Nakashima's daughter Mira and the George Nakashima Studios, KnollStudio reintroduced the Straight Chair in 2008. With the help of three-dimensional scanning software, the Knoll Development Group created an exact replica of the handmade original.

Knoll International – A belief in modern design

In 1938, Knoll International was founded by Hans and Florence Knoll, who embraced the creative genius at the Bauhaus School and the Cranbrook Academy of Art to create new types of furniture and environments for the workplace. Their approach was to combine craftsmanship with technology through the use of design. Florence Knoll also developed the idea of the modern office and pioneered the interior design profession.

Knoll has been recognized internationally for creating workplace and residential furnishings that inspire, evolve, and endure. With its thoughtful, inventive products Knoll responds to individual work styles and transcends multiple generations. Knoll's commitment to modern, sustainable design and understanding of the workplace results in a unique portfolio. Here, the latest collections sit alongside modern classics and iconic products.

For more than 80 years now Knoll has remained true to the Bauhaus design philosophy that modern furniture should complement architectural space, not compete with it. Therefore, they use modern design to connect people to their work, their lives, their world. The essence of it all: modern living and working with a contemporary approach without losing a connection to the past.

Traditional craftsmanship: George Nakashima

George Nakashima is one of the most recognised furniture designers and makers of the 20th century, celebrated for his traditionally inspired designs and legendary craftsmanship. Nakashima studied architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle, the Ecole Americaine des Beaux-Arts Fontainebleau in France and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During World War II, he learned the art of Japanese woodworking from a local elder in an internment camp. He then travelled the world by steamship and finally settled in Japan. Here he worked for the American architect Antonin Raymond.

Back in America, Nakashima became an important figure in the American craft movement. His furniture is known for its simplicity and careful attention to material properties. He often contrasted the natural edge of a piece of wood with traditional Japanese joinery. During his career, Nakashima received the Gold Medal for Craftsmanship from the American Institute of Architects, the Hazlett Award, and in 1983, the Order of the Sacred Treasure - an honour bestowed upon him by the Emperor of Japan. Nakashima has been the subject of several solo exhibitions and is also the author of the book The Soul of a Tree: A Woodworker's Reflections.

Material and format

The frame of this timeless classic is made of solid American walnut. The chair legs and crossbars are also turned from walnut. Hickory wood was used for the struts of the backrest. This provides a wonderful cool and warm contrast.

The surface of the chair has been given a matt-gloss finish. The gliding feet are made of nylon and protect the chair as well as the floor. Thanks to the high-quality materials, you will enjoy this beautifully shaped designer piece for a long time!

The Straight chair is 57 cm wide, 51 cm deep and 75.5 cm high. The seat height is 42 cm. The chair is therefore particularly suitable for tables with a height of 70 - 75 cm.

QUICK SHIP quick delivery programme

The Straight chair is part of Knoll International's fast delivery programme. The delivery time is therefore only 2 - 3 weeks.

Note: The chair is only available in American walnut. This has an intense natural colour characteristic that can range from chocolate, grey and violet-brown to dark honey tones. The colour variations become softer and more even over time.

Special feature: The signature of designer George Nakashima is embossed on the underside of each Straight chair.
