Silhouette: Rope Chair by Artek
This particular chair looks more like a silhouette than a solid piece of furniture. Artek itself describes it as a line drawing translated into three dimensions, a simple artistic gesture that is reproduced in space.
The chair was designed by the brothers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and combines sophisticated technology with creative expression and stiff tubes with a flexible rope. Where other chairs prescribe sitting postures, the Rope Chair invites alternative and creative movements and positions. In the spirit of the Artek founders, the chair is an object that is shaped by its user.
Artek - always modern
Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. With their designs, they wanted to promote a modern culture of living. The radical spirit of its founders still lives in Artek today and so the company produces furniture from the world of modern design that stands at the interface of design, architecture and art. They are characterised by clarity, functionality and poetic simplicity.
Material and format
The chair consists of ash wood veneer and a rope made of polyester. It is 51 cm wide, 44 cm deep and 80 cm high. The seat height is 45.5 cm and the armrests are 66.5 cm high.
